“My Mommy Has Naked Hair”: How Children Really See Your Chemo Hair Loss

"Mijn mama heeft bloot haar": of hoe kinderen je haarverlies door chemo écht zien
Little kids can say disarmingly funny things sometimes. What’s the funniest thing a child has ever said about your wig, headscarf or bald head? We asked our Facebook fans and thought their answers were so beautiful that we bundled them for you in this heartwarming blog post.

Sabine: “My little daughter of 5 – now 6 – always said I had bald hair. I thought that was so funny. She loved me with my bald hair...”

Evelyne: “My 4-year-old son Finn came home from school one day and said: ‘Mum, I’m going to sprinkle seeds on your head and water them so your hair will grow faster!’”

Annemie: “After little Finn got the explanation about why my hair fell out, he asked me a few days later: ‘But if you have cancer, do your teeth fall out too?’”

Annie: “It was winter when I came home with my wig. I said I would have it cut a bit shorter for summer. Then my son said: ‘That’s convenient, mum, now you can go shopping while your hair is at the hairdresser’s! That saves a lot of time!’”

Monica: “One afternoon I was washing my wig in the sink when my 4-year-old daughter came to take a look and got a fright: ‘Mum, are you washing my guinea pig?!’ (the guinea pig was blonde too). So then my wig had a name and it was always a party when we washed it with my two daughters.”

Sarah: “My friend’s little boy said: ‘That’s a really fancy swimming cap, isn’t it.’ We were all in stitches :-)”

Bianca: “One day I was on my bike on my way to the shop when I passed a mum with her little daughter on the back of her bike. The girl looked at me and shouted to her mum: ‘Mum, I want what that lady has on her head too, because it’s pretty.’”

Inge: “One morning my 9-year-old daughter came downstairs and said, completely serious: ‘Wow mum, you’re really lucky, you know. I’m having such a bad hair day today. At least you don’t have that problem.’ And I could only agree with her...”

Sandy: “When he saw me bald one morning, my son Joost said: ‘Mum, one thing is for sure, you’re not going to have head lice.’ I burst out laughing. At times like that you’re so happy to have your children around you :-)”
