Drink plenty — that’s the golden rule. And not just on extremely hot days. When you’re undergoing chemotherapy or taking other medication, hydration is essential to flush out toxins and prevent dehydration. That’s why in this article we share 3 simple tips and insights to help you get enough fluids every day.
Tip 1: make water your go-to (and try a bottle)
The guideline has been the same for years: drink about 2 liters of water a day. Tea and coffee are water-based too, right? True, but they also contain diuretics that can increase fluid loss. That doesn’t mean you have to give up your favorite cup of tea or coffee, just make sure you also drink plain water alongside.
Did you know 2 liters equals about 8 to 10 glasses? Struggling to get that much down in a day? Try using a small bottle or a reusable water bottle — about half a liter — instead of glasses. You’ll notice you drink more when you refill a bottle than when you pour glass after glass.

Tip 2: skip the ice and bubbles
Did you know that very cold drinks and sparkling water quench your thirst so strongly that you may end up drinking less overall? That means by the end of the day you might not have had enough. So stick to still water and don’t overdo the ice cubes.

Tip 3: add some flavor
Does plain water taste unpleasant because of that metallic aftertaste from chemo? Or maybe you’re just not a fan of water in general? Make it more appealing by adding some natural flavor. Try fresh strawberries, raspberries, mint leaves, lemon or orange slices, cucumber… the options are endless. A little variety will keep you coming back for more.
Do you have trouble eating or drinking because of your treatment? Or specific questions?
Talk to your doctor, onco-coach or nurse. Most hospitals also have a team of dietitians who can give you personalized advice and guidance on nutrition.
